           Letmoralistsandphilosopherssaywhattheymay,itisveryquestionablewhetheraguiltymanwouldhavefelthalfasmuchmiserythatnight,asKitdid,beinginnocent.Theworld,beingintheconstantcommissionofvastquantitiesofinjustice,isalittletooapttocomfortitselfwiththeideathatifthevictimofitsfalsehoodandmalicehaveaclearconscience,hecannotfailtobesustainedunderhistrials,andsomehoworothertocomerightatlast;‘inwhichcase,’saytheywhohavehuntedhimdown,thoughwecertainlydon’texpectitnobodywillbebetterpleasedthanwe.’Whereas,theworldwoulddowelltoreflect,thatinjusticeisinitself,toeverygenerousandproperlyconstitutedmind,aninjury,ofallothersthemostinsufferable,themosttorturing,andthemosthardtobear;andthatmanyclearconscienceshavegonetotheiraccountelsewhere,andmanysoundheartshavebroken,becauseofthisveryreason;theknowledgeoftheirowndesertsonlyaggravatingtheirsufferings,andrenderingthemthelessendurable.
