           Thenthereweresomanyofthemwiththeirgreatglassyeyesand,astheystoodonebehindtheotherallaboutherbed,theylookedsolikelivingcreatures,andyetsounlikeintheirgrimstillnessandsilence,thatshehadakindofterrorofthemfortheirownsakes,andwouldoftenliewatchingtheirduskyfiguresuntilshewasobligedtoriseandlightacandle,orgoandsitattheopenwindowandfeelacompanionshipinthebrightstars.Atthesetimes,shewouldrecalltheoldhouseandthewindowatwhichsheusedtositalone;andthenshewouldthinkofpoorKitandallhiskindness,untilthetearscameintohereyes,andshewouldweepandsmiletogether.

           Oftenandanxiouslyatthissilenthour,herthoughtsrevertedtohergrandfather,andshewouldwonderhowmuchherememberedoftheirformerlife,andwhetherhewaseverreallymindfulofthechangeintheirconditionandoftheirlatehelplessnessanddestitution.Whentheywerewanderingabout,sheseldomthoughtofthis,butnowshecouldnothelpconsideringwhatwouldbecomeofthemifhefellsick,orherownstrengthweretofailher.Hewasverypatientandwilling,happytoexecuteanylittletask,andgladtobeofuse;buthewasinthesamelistlessstate,withnoprospectofimprovementamerechildapoor,thoughtless,vacantcreatureaharmlessfondoldman,susceptibleoftenderloveandregardforher,andofpleasantandpainfulimpressions,butalivetonothingmore.
