Ithadbeengraduallygettingovercast,andnowtheskywasdarkandlowering,savewherethegloryofthedepartingsunpiledupmassesofgoldandburningfire,decayingembersofwhichgleamedhereandtherethroughtheblackveil,andshoneredlydownupontheearth.Thewindbegantomoaninhollowmurmurs,asthesunwentdowncarryinggladdayelsewhere;andatrainofdullcloudscomingupagainstit,menacedthunderandlightning.Largedropsofrainsoonbegantofall,and,asthestormcloudscamesailingonward,otherssuppliedthevoidtheyleftbehindandspreadoverallthesky.Thenwasheardthelowrumblingofdistantthunder,thenthelightningquivered,andthenthedarknessofanhourseemedtohavegatheredinaninstant.
Fearfuloftakingshelterbeneathatreeorhedge,theoldmanandthechildhurriedalongthehighroad,hopingtofindsomehouseinwhichtheycouldseekarefugefromthestorm,whichhadnowburstforthinearnest,andeverymomentincreasedinviolence.Drenchedwiththepeltingrain,confusedbythedeafeningthunder,andbewilderedbytheglareoftheforkedlightning,theywouldhavepassedasolitaryhousewithoutbeingawareofitsvicinity,hadnotaman,whowasstandingatthedoor,calledlustilytothemtoenter.
‘Yourearsoughttobebetterthanotherfolks’atanyrate,ifyoumakesolittleofthechanceofbeingstruckblind,’hesaid,retreatingfromthedoorandshadinghiseyeswithhishandsasthejaggedlightningcameagain.‘Whatwereyougoingpastfor,eh?’headded,asheclosedthedoorandledthewayalongapassagetoaroombehind.
