           Theyfancied,too,alonelyairabouthimandhishouse,butperhapsthatwasbecausetheotherpeopleformedamerrycompanyuponthegreen,andheseemedtheonlysolitarymaninalltheplace.

           Theywereverytired,andthechildwouldhavebeenboldenoughtoaddressevenaschoolmaster,butforsomethinginhismannerwhichseemedtodenotethathewasuneasyordistressed.Astheystoodhesitatingatalittledistance,theysawthathesatforafewminutesatatimelikeoneinabrownstudy,thenlaidasidehispipeandtookafewturnsinhisgarden,thenapproachedthegateandlookedtowardsthegreen,thentookuphispipeagainwithasigh,andsatdownthoughtfullyasbefore.
