           Takingtheirwayalongitforashortdistance,theycametoalane,soshadedbythetreesoneitherhandthattheymettogetherover-head,andarchedthenarrowway.Abrokenfinger-postannouncedthatthisledtoavillagethreemilesoff;andthithertheyresolvedtobendtheirsteps.

           Themilesappearedsolongthattheysometimesthoughttheymusthavemissedtheirroad.Butatlast,totheirgreatjoy,itleddownwardsinasteepdescent,withoverhangingbanksoverwhichthefootpathsled;andtheclusteredhousesofthevillagepeepedfromthewoodyhollowbelow.

           Itwasaverysmallplace.Themenandboyswereplayingatcricketonthegreen;andastheotherfolkswerelookingon,theywanderedupanddown,uncertainwheretoseekahumblelodging.Therewasbutoneoldmaninthelittlegardenbeforehiscottage,andhimtheyweretimidofapproaching,forhewastheschoolmaster,andhad‘School’writtenupoverhiswindowinblacklettersonawhiteboard.Hewasapale,simple-lookingman,ofaspareandmeagrehabit,andsatamonghisflowersandbeehives,smokinghispipe,inthelittleporchbeforehisdoor.

           ‘Speaktohim,dear,’theoldmanwhispered.

           ‘Iamalmostafraidtodisturbhim,’saidthechildtimidly.‘Hedoesnotseemtoseeus.Perhapsifwewaitalittle,hemaylookthisway.’

           Theywaited,buttheschoolmastercastnolooktowardsthem,andstillsat,thoughtfulandsilent,inthelittleporch.Hehadakindface.Inhisplainoldsuitofblack,helookedpaleandmeagre.
