           ‘Yourgrandchild,friend?’

           Thechildlookedroundtheroomasshetookherseat.Therewereacoupleofforms,notchedandcutandinkedallover;asmalldealdeskperchedonfourlegs,atwhichnodoubtthemastersat;afewdog’s-earedbooksuponahighshelf;andbesidethemamotleycollectionofpeg-tops,balls,kites,fishing-lines,marbles,half-eatenapples,andotherconfiscatedpropertyofidleurchins.Displayedonhooksuponthewallinalltheirterrors,werethecaneandruler;andnearthem,onasmallshelfofitsown,thedunce’scap,madeofoldnewspapersanddecoratedwithglaringwafersofthelargestsize.But,thegreatornamentsofthewallswerecertainmoralsentencesfairlycopiedingoodroundtext,andwell-workedsumsinsimpleadditionandmultiplication,evidentlyachievedbythesamehand,whichwereplentifullypastedallroundtheroom:forthedoublepurpose,asitseemed,ofbearingtestimonytotheexcellenceoftheschool,andkindlingaworthyemulationinthebosomsofthescholars.
