Troywanderedalongtowardsthesouth.Acompositefeeling,madeupofdisgustwiththe,tohim,humdrumtediousnessofafarmer’slife,gloomyimagesofherwholayinthechurchyard,remorse,andageneralaversenesstohiswife’ssociety,impelledhimtoseekahomeinanyplaceonearthsaveWeatherbury.ThesadaccessoriesofFanny’sendconfrontedhimasvividpictureswhichthreatenedtobeindelible,andmadelifeinBathsheba’shouseintolerable.Atthreeintheafternoonhefoundhimselfatthefootofaslopemorethanamileinlength,whichrantotheridgeofarangeofhillslyingparallelwiththeshore,andformingamonotonousbarrierbetweenthebasinofcultivatedcountryinlandandthewildersceneryofthecoast.Upthehillstretchedaroadnearlystraightandperfectlywhite,thetwosidesapproachingeachotherinagradualtapertilltheymettheskyatthetopabouttwomilesoff.Throughoutthelengthofthisnarrowandirksomeinclinedplanenotasignoflifewasvisibleonthisgarishafternoon.Troytoileduptheroadwithalanguoranddepressiongreaterthananyhehadexperiencedformanyadayandyearbefore.Theairwaswarmandmuggy,andthetopseemedtorecedeasheapproached.
Atlasthereachedthesummit,andawideandnovelprospectburstuponhimwithaneffectalmostlikethatofthePacificuponBalboa’sgaze.
