Shecameupandlookedaround—thenontheothersideofthehedge.Gabrielwasabouttoadvanceandrestorethemissingarticlewhenanunexpectedperformanceinducedhimtosuspendtheactionforthepresent.Thepath,afterpassingthecowshed,bisectedtheplantation.Itwasnotabridle-path—merelyapedestrian’strack,andtheboughsspreadhorizontallyataheightnotgreaterthansevenfeetabovetheground,whichmadeitimpossibletorideerectbeneaththem.Thegirl,whoworenoriding-habit,lookedaroundforamoment,asiftoassureherselfthatallhumanitywasoutofview,thendexterouslydroppedbackwardsflatuponthepony’sback,herheadoveritstail,herfeetagainstitsshoulders,andhereyestothesky.
