XLVI. The Gurgoyle: Its Doings

           

           ThetowerofWeatherburyChurchwasasquareerectionoffourteenth-centurydate,havingtwostonegurgoylesoneachofthefourfacesofitsparapet.Oftheseeightcarvedprotuberancesonlytwoatthistimecontinuedtoservethepurposeoftheirerectionthatofspoutingthewaterfromtheleadroofwithin.Onemouthineachfronthadbeenclosedbybygonechurch-wardensassuperfluous,andtwootherswerebrokenawayandchokedamatternotofmuchconsequencetothewellbeingofthetower,forthetwomouthswhichstillremainedopenandactiveweregapingenoughtodoallthework.

           Ithasbeensometimesarguedthatthereisnotruercriterionofthevitalityofanygivenart-periodthanthepowerofthemaster-spiritsofthattimeingrotesque;andcertainlyintheinstanceofGothicartthereisnodisputingtheproposition.Weatherburytowerwasasomewhatearlyinstanceoftheuseofanornamentalparapetinparishasdistinctfromcathedralchurches,andthegurgoyles,whicharethenecessarycorrelativesofaparapet,wereexceptionallyprominentoftheboldestcutthatthehandcouldshape,andofthemostoriginaldesignthatahumanbraincouldconceive.Therewas,sotospeak,thatsymmetryintheirdistortionwhichislessthecharacteristicofBritishthanofContinentalgrotesquesoftheperiod.Alltheeightweredifferentfromeachother.Abeholderwasconvincedthatnothingonearthcouldbemorehideousthanthosehesawonthenorthsideuntilhewentroundtothesouth.Ofthetwoonthislatterface,onlythatatthesouth-easterncornerconcernsthestory.
