XLVI. The Gurgoyle: Its Doings
ThetowerofWeatherburyChurchwasasquareerectionoffourteenth-centurydate,havingtwostonegurgoylesoneachofthefourfacesofitsparapet.Oftheseeightcarvedprotuberancesonlytwoatthistimecontinuedtoservethepurposeoftheirerection—thatofspoutingthewaterfromtheleadroofwithin.Onemouthineachfronthadbeenclosedbybygonechurch-wardensassuperfluous,andtwootherswerebrokenawayandchoked—amatternotofmuchconsequencetothewellbeingofthetower,forthetwomouthswhichstillremainedopenandactiveweregapingenoughtodoallthework.
Ithasbeensometimesarguedthatthereisnotruercriterionofthevitalityofanygivenart-periodthanthepowerofthemaster-spiritsofthattimeingrotesque;andcertainlyintheinstanceofGothicartthereisnodisputingtheproposition.Weatherburytowerwasasomewhatearlyinstanceoftheuseofanornamentalparapetinparishasdistinctfromcathedralchurches,andthegurgoyles,whicharethenecessarycorrelativesofaparapet,wereexceptionallyprominent—oftheboldestcutthatthehandcouldshape,andofthemostoriginaldesignthatahumanbraincouldconceive.Therewas,sotospeak,thatsymmetryintheirdistortionwhichislessthecharacteristicofBritishthanofContinentalgrotesquesoftheperiod.Alltheeightweredifferentfromeachother.Abeholderwasconvincedthatnothingonearthcouldbemorehideousthanthosehesawonthenorthsideuntilhewentroundtothesouth.Ofthetwoonthislatterface,onlythatatthesouth-easterncornerconcernsthestory.
