           Onadarknight,afewdayslater,Oakcamewithmysteriousstepsfromthesurrogate’sdoor,inCasterbridge.Onthewayhomeheheardaheavytreadinfrontofhim,and,overtakingtheman,foundhimtobeCoggan.Theywalkedtogetherintothevillageuntiltheycametoalittlelanebehindthechurch,leadingdowntothecottageofLabanTall,whohadlatelybeeninstalledasclerkoftheparish,andwasyetinmortalterroratchurchonSundayswhenheheardhislonevoiceamongcertainhardwordsofthePsalms,whithernomanventuredtofollowhim.

           "Well,good-night,Coggan,"saidOak,"I’mgoingdownthisway."

           "Oh!"saidCoggan,surprised;"what’sgoingonto-nightthen,makesoboldMr.Oak?"

           ItseemedratherungenerousnottotellCoggan,underthecircumstances,forCogganhadbeentrueassteelallthroughthetimeofGabriel’sunhappinessaboutBathsheba,andGabrielsaid,"Youcankeepasecret,Coggan?"

           "You’veprovedme,andyouknow."

           "Yes,Ihave,andIdoknow.Well,then,mistressandImeantogetmarriedto-morrowmorning."
