Fordrearinessnothingcouldsurpassaprospectintheoutskirtsofacertaintownandmilitarystation,manymilesnorthofWeatherbury,atalaterhouronthissamesnowyevening—ifthatmaybecalledaprospectofwhichthechiefconstituentwasdarkness.
Itwasanightwhensorrowmaycometothebrightestwithoutcausinganygreatsenseofincongruity:when,withimpressiblepersons,lovebecomessolicitousness,hopesinkstomisgiving,andfaithtohope:whentheexerciseofmemorydoesnotstirfeelingsofregretatopportunitiesforambitionthathavebeenpassedby,andanticipationdoesnotprompttoenterprise.
Thescenewasapublicpath,borderedonthelefthandbyariver,behindwhichroseahighwall.Ontherightwasatractofland,partlymeadowandpartlymoor,reaching,atitsremoteverge,toawideundulatingupland.
Thechangesoftheseasonsarelessobtrusiveonspotsofthiskindthanamidwoodlandscenery.Still,toacloseobserver,theyarejustasperceptible;thedifferenceisthattheirmediaofmanifestationarelesstriteandfamiliarthansuchwell-knownonesastheburstingofthebudsorthefalloftheleaf.Manyarenotsostealthyandgradualaswemaybeapttoimagineinconsideringthegeneraltorpidityofamoororwaste.Winter,incomingtothecountryhereabout,advancedinwell-markedstages,whereinmighthavebeensuccessivelyobservedtheretreatofthesnakes,thetransformationoftheferns,thefillingofthepools,arisingoffogs,theembrowningbyfrost,thecollapseofthefungi,andanobliterationbysnow.
