ThenexteveningBathsheba,withtheideaofgettingoutofthewayofMr.Boldwoodintheeventofhisreturningtoanswerhernoteinperson,proceededtofulfilanengagementmadewithLiddysomefewhoursearlier.Bathsheba’scompanion,asagaugeoftheirreconciliation,hadbeengrantedaweek’sholidaytovisithersister,whowasmarriedtoathrivinghurdlerandcattle-crib-makerlivinginadelightfullabyrinthofhazelcopsenotfarbeyondYalbury.ThearrangementwasthatMissEverdeneshouldhonourthembycomingthereforadayortwotoinspectsomeingeniouscontrivanceswhichthismanofthewoodshadintroducedintohiswares.
LeavingherinstructionswithGabrielandMaryann,thattheyweretoseeeverythingcarefullylockedupforthenight,shewentoutofthehousejustatthecloseofatimelythunder-shower,whichhadrefinedtheair,anddaintilybathedthecoatoftheland,thoughallbeneathwasdryasever.Freshnesswasexhaledinanessencefromthevariedcontoursofbankandhollow,asiftheearthbreathedmaidenbreath;andthepleasedbirdswerehymningtothescene.Beforeher,amongtheclouds,therewasacontrastintheshapeoflairsoffiercelightwhichshowedthemselvesintheneighbourhoodofahiddensun,lingeringontothefarthestnorth-westcorneroftheheavensthatthismidsummerseasonallowed.
