TheWeatherburybeeswerelateintheirswarmingthisyear.ItwasinthelatterpartofJune,andthedayaftertheinterviewwithTroyinthehayfield,thatBathshebawasstandinginhergarden,watchingaswarmintheairandguessingtheirprobablesettlingplace.Notonlyweretheylatethisyear,butunruly.Sometimesthroughoutawholeseasonalltheswarmswouldalightonthelowestattainablebough—suchaspartofacurrant-bushorespalierapple-tree;nextyeartheywould,withjustthesameunanimity,makestraightofftotheuppermostmemberofsometall,gauntcostard,orquarrenden,andtheredefyallinvaderswhodidnotcomearmedwithladdersandstavestotakethem.
Thiswasthecaseatpresent.Bathsheba’seyes,shadedbyonehand,werefollowingtheascendingmultitudeagainsttheunexplorablestretchofbluetilltheyultimatelyhaltedbyoneoftheunwieldytreesspokenof.Aprocesssomewhatanalogoustothatofallegedformationsoftheuniverse,timeandtimesago,wasobservable.Thebustlingswarmhadswepttheskyinascatteredanduniformhaze,whichnowthickenedtoanebulouscentre:thisglidedontoaboughandgrewstilldenser,tillitformedasolidblackspotuponthelight.
Themenandwomenbeingallbusilyengagedinsavingthehay—evenLiddyhadleftthehouseforthepurposeoflendingahand—Bathshebaresolvedtohivethebeesherself,ifpossible.
