           AmongthemultifariousdutieswhichBathshebahadvoluntarilyimposeduponherselfbydispensingwiththeservicesofabailiff,wastheparticularoneoflookingroundthehomesteadbeforegoingtobed,toseethatallwasrightandsafeforthenight.Gabrielhadalmostconstantlyprecededherinthistoureveryevening,watchingheraffairsascarefullyasanyspeciallyappointedofficerofsurveillancecouldhavedone;butthistenderdevotionwastoagreatextentunknowntohismistress,andasmuchaswasknownwassomewhatthanklesslyreceived.Womenarenevertiredofbewailingman’sficklenessinlove,buttheyonlyseemtosnubhisconstancy.

           Aswatchingisbestdoneinvisibly,sheusuallycarriedadarklanterninherhand,andeverynowandthenturnedonthelighttoexaminenooksandcornerswiththecoolnessofametropolitanpoliceman.Thiscoolnessmayhaveoweditsexistencenotsomuchtoherfearlessnessofexpecteddangerastoherfreedomfromthesuspicionofany;herworstanticipateddiscoverybeingthatahorsemightnotbewellbedded,thefowlsnotallin,oradoornotclosed.

           Thisnightthebuildingswereinspectedasusual,andshewentroundtothefarmpaddock.Heretheonlysoundsdisturbingthestillnessweresteadymunchingsofmanymouths,andstentorianbreathingsfromallbutinvisiblenoses,endinginsnoresandpuffsliketheblowingofbellowsslowly.
