XVIII. Boldwood in Meditation—Regret

           

           BoldwoodwastenantofwhatwascalledLittleWeatherburyFarm,andhispersonwasthenearestapproachtoaristocracythatthisremoterquarteroftheparishcouldboastof.Genteelstrangers,whosegodwastheirtown,whomighthappentobecompelledtolingeraboutthisnookforaday,heardthesoundoflightwheels,andprayedtoseegoodsociety,tothedegreeofasolitarylord,orsquireattheveryleast,butitwasonlyMr.Boldwoodgoingoutfortheday.Theyheardthesoundofwheelsyetoncemore,andwerere-animatedtoexpectancy:itwasonlyMr.Boldwoodcominghomeagain.

           Hishousestoodrecessedfromtheroad,andthestables,whicharetoafarmwhatafireplaceistoaroom,werebehind,theirlowerportionsbeinglostamidbushesoflaurel.Insidethebluedoor,openhalf-waydown,weretobeseenatthistimethebacksandtailsofhalf-a-dozenwarmandcontentedhorsesstandingintheirstalls;andasthusviewed,theypresentedalternationsofroanandbay,inshapeslikeaMoorisharch,thetailbeingastreakdownthemidstofeach.Overthese,andlosttotheeyegazinginfromtheouterlight,themouthsofthesameanimalscouldbeheardbusilysustainingtheabove-namedwarmthandplumpnessbyquantitiesofoatsandhay.Therestlessandshadowyfigureofacoltwanderedaboutaloose-boxattheend,whilstthesteadygrindofalltheeaterswasoccasionallydiversifiedbytherattleofaropeorthestampofafoot.
