XVIII. Boldwood in Meditation—Regret

           ThephasesofBoldwood’slifewereordinaryenough,buthiswasnotanordinarynature.Thatstillness,whichstruckcasualobserversmorethananythingelseinhischaracterandhabit,andseemedsopreciselyliketherestofinanition,mayhavebeentheperfectbalanceofenormousantagonisticforcespositivesandnegativesinfineadjustment.Hisequilibriumdisturbed,hewasinextremityatonce.Ifanemotionpossessedhimatall,itruledhim;afeelingnotmasteringhimwasentirelylatent.Stagnantorrapid,itwasneverslow.Hewasalwayshitmortally,orhewasmissed.
