TwentypoundshavingbeensecuredfromBathsheba,hehadmanagedtoaddtothesumeveryfarthinghecouldmusteronhisownaccount,whichhadbeensevenpoundsten.Withthismoney,twenty-sevenpoundsteninall,hehadhastilydrivenfromthegatethatmorningtokeephisappointmentwithFannyRobin.
OnreachingCasterbridgeheleftthehorseandtrapataninn,andatfiveminutesbeforetencamebacktothebridgeatthelowerendofthetown,andsathimselfupontheparapet.Theclocksstruckthehour,andnoFannyappeared.Infact,atthatmomentshewasbeingrobedinhergrave-clothesbytwoattendantsattheUnionpoorhouse—thefirstandlasttiring-womenthegentlecreaturehadeverbeenhonouredwith.Thequarterwent,thehalfhour.ArushofrecollectioncameuponTroyashewaited:thiswasthesecondtimeshehadbrokenaseriousengagementwithhim.
