ItwasthefirstdayofJune,andthesheep-shearingseasonculminated,thelandscape,eventotheleanestpasture,beingallhealthandcolour.Everygreenwasyoung,everyporewasopen,andeverystalkwasswollenwithracingcurrentsofjuice.Godwaspalpablypresentinthecountry,andthedevilhadgonewiththeworldtotown.Flossycatkinsofthelaterkinds,fern-sproutslikebishops’croziers,thesquare-headedmoschatel,theoddcuckoo-pint,—likeanapoplecticsaintinanicheofmalachite,—snow-whiteladies’-smocks,thetoothwort,approximatingtohumanflesh,theenchanter’snight-shade,andtheblack-petaleddoleful-bells,wereamongthequainterobjectsofthevegetableworldinandaboutWeatherburyatthisteemingtime;andoftheanimal,themetamorphosedfiguresofMr.
