WenowseetheelementoffollydistinctlyminglingwiththemanyvaryingparticularswhichmadeupthecharacterofBathshebaEverdene.Itwasalmostforeigntoherintrinsicnature.IntroducedaslymphonthedartofEros,iteventuallypermeatedandcolouredherwholeconstitution.Bathsheba,thoughshehadtoomuchunderstandingtobeentirelygovernedbyherwomanliness,hadtoomuchwomanlinesstouseherunderstandingtothebestadvantage.Perhapsinnominorpointdoeswomanastonishherhelpmatemorethaninthestrangepowershepossessesofbelievingcajoleriesthatsheknowstobefalse—except,indeed,inthatofbeingutterlyscepticalonstricturesthatsheknowstobetrue.
BathshebalovedTroyinthewaythatonlyself-reliantwomenlovewhentheyabandontheirself-reliance.Whenastrongwomanrecklesslythrowsawayherstrengthsheisworsethanaweakwomanwhohasneverhadanystrengthtothrowaway.Onesourceofherinadequacyisthenoveltyoftheoccasion.Shehasneverhadpracticeinmakingthebestofsuchacondition.Weaknessisdoublyweakbybeingnew.
Bathshebawasnotconsciousofguileinthismatter.Thoughinonesenseawomanoftheworld,itwas,afterall,thatworldofdaylightcoteriesandgreencarpetswhereincattleformthepassingcrowdandwindsthebusyhum;whereaquietfamilyofrabbitsorhareslivesontheothersideofyourparty-wall,whereyourneighbouriseverybodyinthetything,andwherecalculationisconfinedtomarket-days.
