           Shebeganlookingmorelanguidly,andgazedbackatthesportsmen,asitwere,withperplexityorreproachinhereyes.Shotsfollowedshotsinrapidsuccession.Thesmokeofthepowderhungaboutthesportsmen,whileinthegreatroomynetofthegamebagtherewereonlythreelightlittlesnipe.AndoftheseonehadbeenkilledbyVeslovskyalone,andonebybothofthemtogether.MeanwhilefromtheothersideofthemarshcamethesoundofStepanArkadyevitch’sshots,notfrequent,but,asLevinfancied,well-directed,foralmostaftereachtheyheard“Krak,Krak,apporte!”

           ThisexcitedLevinstillmore.Thesnipewerefloatingcontinuallyintheairoverthereeds.Theirwhirringwingsclosetotheearth,andtheirharshcrieshighintheair,couldbeheardonallsides;thesnipethathadrisenfirstandflownupintotheair,settledagainbeforethesportsmen.Insteadoftwohawkstherewerenowdozensofthemhoveringwithshrillcriesoverthemarsh.

           Afterwalkingthroughthelargerhalfofthemarsh,LevinandVeslovskyreachedtheplacewherethepeasants’mowing-grasswasdividedintolongstripsreachingtothereeds,markedoffinoneplacebythetrampledgrass,inanotherbyapathmownthroughit.Halfofthesestripshadalreadybeenmown.

           Thoughtherewasnotsomuchhopeoffindingbirdsintheuncutpartasthecutpart,LevinhadpromisedStepanArkadyevitchtomeethim,andsohewalkedonwithhiscompanionthroughthecutanduncutpatches.
