           “Youthinkhecan’tfallinlove,”saidKitty,translatingintoherownlanguage.

           “It’snotsomuchthathecan’tfallinlove,”Levinsaid,smiling,“buthehasnottheweaknessnecessary....I’vealwaysenviedhim,andevennow,whenI’msohappy,Istillenvyhim.”

           “Youenvyhimfornotbeingabletofallinlove?”

           “IenvyhimforbeingbetterthanI,”saidLevin.“Hedoesnotliveforhimself.Hiswholelifeissubordinatedtohisduty.Andthat’swhyhecanbecalmandcontented.”

           “Andyou?”Kittyasked,withanironicalandlovingsmile.

           Shecouldneverhaveexplainedthechainofthoughtthatmadehersmile;butthelastlinkinitwasthatherhusband,inexaltinghisbrotherandabasinghimself,wasnotquitesincere.Kittyknewthatthisinsinceritycamefromhisloveforhisbrother,fromhissenseofshameatbeingtoohappy,andaboveallfromhisunflaggingcravingtobebettersheloveditinhim,andsoshesmiled.

           “Andyou?Whatareyoudissatisfiedwith?”sheasked,withthesamesmile.
