           Hehadcaughtthewords“alwaysatnineo’clock,”andheknewthatthiswassaidofhisfather,andthathisfatherandmothercouldnotmeet.Thatheunderstood,butonethinghecouldnotunderstandwhythereshouldbealookofdreadandshameinherface?...Shewasnotinfault,butshewasafraidofhimandashamedofsomething.Hewouldhavelikedtoputaquestionthatwouldhavesetatrestthisdoubt,buthedidnotdare;hesawthatshewasmiserable,andhefeltforher.Silentlyhepressedclosetoherandwhispered,“Don’tgoyet.Hewon’tcomejustyet.”

           Themotherheldhimawayfromhertoseewhathewasthinking,whattosaytohim,andinhisfrightenedfaceshereadnotonlythathewasspeakingofhisfather,but,asitwere,askingherwhatheoughttothinkabouthisfather.

           “Seryozha,mydarling,”shesaid,“lovehim;he’sbetterandkinderthanIam,andIhavedonehimwrong.Whenyougrowupyouwilljudge.”
