           Somelady,”saidKapitonitch,who,notyetdressed,inhisovercoatandgaloshes,hadpeepedoutofthewindowandseenaladyinaveilstandingcloseuptothedoor.Hisassistant,aladAnnadidnotknow,hadnosooneropenedthedoortoherthanshecamein,andpullingathree-roublenoteoutofhermuffputithurriedlyintohishand.

           “SeryozhaSergeyAlexeitch,”shesaid,andwasgoingon.Scrutinizingthenote,theporter’sassistantstoppedheratthesecondglassdoor.

           “Whomdoyouwant?”heasked.

           Shedidnothearhiswordsandmadenoanswer.

           Noticingtheembarrassmentoftheunknownlady,Kapitonitchwentouttoher,openedtheseconddoorforher,andaskedherwhatshewaspleasedtowant.

           “FromPrinceSkorodumovforSergeyAlexeitch,”shesaid.

           “Hishonor’snotupyet,”saidtheporter,lookingatherattentively.

           Annahadnotanticipatedthattheabsolutelyunchangedhallofthehousewhereshehadlivedfornineyearswouldsogreatlyaffecther.Memoriessweetandpainfulroseoneafteranotherinherheart,andforamomentsheforgotwhatshewasherefor.

           “Wouldyoukindlywait?”saidKapitonitch,takingoffherfurcloak.

           Shetriedtosaysomething,buthervoicerefusedtoutteranysound;withaguiltyandimploringglanceattheoldmanshewentwithlight,swiftstepsupthestairs.Bentdouble,andhisgaloshescatchinginthesteps,Kapitonitchranafterher,tryingtoovertakeher.
