           Buthehadbeentoldthatallmendie;hehadaskedpeople,indeed,whomhetrusted,andtheytoo,hadconfirmedit;hisoldnurse,too,saidthesame,thoughreluctantly.ButEnochhadnotdied,andsoitfollowedthateveryonedidnotdie.“AndwhycannotanyoneelsesoserveGodandbetakenalivetoheaven?”thoughtSeryozha.Badpeople,thatisthoseSeryozhadidnotlike,theymightdie,butthegoodmightallbelikeEnoch.

           “Butyouhavesaidthatalready.Thisisbad,Seryozha,verybad.Ifyoudon’ttrytolearnwhatismorenecessarythananythingforaChristian,”saidhisfather,gettingup,“whatevercaninterestyou?Iamdispleasedwithyou,andPiotrIgnatitch”(thiswasthemostimportantofhisteachers)“isdispleasedwithyou....Ishallhavetopunishyou.”

           HisfatherandhisteacherwerebothdispleasedwithSeryozha,andhecertainlydidlearnhislessonsverybadly.Butstillitcouldnotbesaidhewasastupidboy.Onthecontrary,hewasfarclevererthantheboyshisteacherheldupasexamplestoSeryozha.Inhisfather’sopinion,hedidnotwanttolearnwhathewastaught.Inrealityhecouldnotlearnthat.Hecouldnot,becausetheclaimsofhisownsoulweremorebindingonhimthanthoseclaimshisfatherandhisteachermadeuponhim.Thoseclaimswereinopposition,andhewasindirectconflictwithhiseducation.
