           Therearepeople,ontheotherhand,whodesireabovealltofindinthatluckyrivalthequalitiesbywhichhehasoutstrippedthem,andseekwithathrobbingacheatheartonlywhatisgood.Levinbelongedtothesecondclass.ButhehadnodifficultyinfindingwhatwasgoodandattractiveinVronsky.Itwasapparentatthefirstglance.Vronskywasasquarelybuilt,darkman,notverytall,withagood-humored,handsome,andexceedinglycalmandresoluteface.Everythingabouthisfaceandfigure,fromhisshort-croppedblackhairandfreshlyshavenchindowntohislooselyfitting,brand-newuniform,wassimpleandatthesametimeelegant.Makingwayfortheladywhohadcomein,VronskywentuptotheprincessandthentoKitty.

           Asheapproachedher,hisbeautifuleyesshonewithaspeciallytenderlight,andwithafaint,happy,andmodestlytriumphantsmile(soitseemedtoLevin),bowingcarefullyandrespectfullyoverher,heheldouthissmallbroadhandtoher.

           Greetingandsayingafewwordstoeveryone,hesatdownwithoutonceglancingatLevin,whohadnevertakenhiseyesoffhim.
