           “Heisgone,”saidthepriest,andwouldhavemovedaway;butsuddenlytherewasafaintstirinthemustachesofthedeadmanthatseemedgluedtogether,andquitedistinctlyinthehushtheyheardfromthebottomofthechestthesharplydefinedsounds:

           “Notquite...soon.”

           Thesightofhisbrother,andthenearnessofdeath,revivedinLevinthatsenseofhorrorinfaceoftheinsolubleenigma,togetherwiththenearnessandinevitabilityofdeath,thathadcomeuponhimthatautumneveningwhenhisbrotherhadcometohim.Thisfeelingwasnowevenstrongerthanbefore;evenlessthanbeforedidhefeelcapableofapprehendingthemeaningofdeath,anditsinevitabilityroseupbeforehimmoreterriblethanever.Butnow,thankstohiswife’spresence,thatfeelingdidnotreducehimtodespair.Inspiteofdeath,hefelttheneedoflifeandlove.Hefeltthatlovesavedhimfromdespair,andthatthislove,underthemenaceofdespair,hadbecomestillstrongerandpurer.Theonemysteryofdeath,stillunsolved,hadscarcelypassedbeforehiseyes,whenanothermysteryhadarisen,asinsoluble,urginghimtoloveandtolife.

           ThedoctorconfirmedhissuppositionsinregardtoKitty.Herindispositionwasasymptomthatshewaswithchild.
