           “WhatamItowritetohim?”saidLevin.“Ihopeyouarenotangrywithhim?”

           “No,nottheleast!”Nikolayanswered,vexedatthequestion.“Tellhimtosendmeadoctor.”

           Hissufferings,steadilygrowingmoreintense,didtheirworkandpreparedhimfordeath.Therewasnopositioninwhichhewasnotinpain,therewasnotaminuteinwhichhewasunconsciousofit,notalimb,notapartofhisbodythatdidnotacheandcausehimagony.Eventhememories,theimpressions,thethoughtsofthisbodyawakenedinhimnowthesameaversionasthebodyitself.Thesightofotherpeople,theirremarks,hisownreminiscences,everythingwasforhimasourceofagony.Thoseabouthimfeltthis,andinstinctivelydidnotallowthemselvestomovefreely,totalk,toexpresstheirwishesbeforehim.Allhislifewasmergedintheonefeelingofsufferinganddesiretoberidofit.
