           “Pleasegoforme,there’salittlebottleinmysmallbag,”shesaid,turningtoherhusband,“youknow,inthesidepocket;bringit,please,andmeanwhilethey’llfinishclearinguphere.”

           Returningwiththebottle,Levinfoundthesickmansettledcomfortablyandeverythingabouthimcompletelychanged.Theheavysmellwasreplacedbythesmellofaromaticvinegar,whichKittywithpoutinglipsandpuffed-out,rosycheekswassquirtingthroughalittlepipe.Therewasnodustvisibleanywhere,arugwaslaidbythebedside.Onthetablestoodmedicinebottlesanddecanterstidilyarranged,andthelinenneededwasfoldedupthere,andKitty’sbroderieanglaise.Ontheothertablebythepatient’sbedtherewerecandlesanddrinkandpowders.
