           Anna’sportraitthesamesubjectpaintedfromnaturebothbyhimandbyMihailovoughttohaveshownVronskythedifferencebetweenhimandMihailov;buthedidnotseeit.OnlyafterMihailov’sportraitwaspaintedheleftoffpaintinghisportraitofAnna,decidingthatitwasnownotneeded.Hispictureofmediævallifehewentonwith.Andhehimself,andGolenishtchev,andstillmoreAnna,thoughtitverygood,becauseitwasfarmorelikethecelebratedpicturestheyknewthanMihailov’spicture.

           Mihailovmeanwhile,althoughAnna’sportraitgreatlyfascinatedhim,wasevenmoregladthantheywerewhenthesittingswereover,andhehadnolongertolistentoGolenishtchev’sdisquisitionsuponart,andcouldforgetaboutVronsky’spainting.HeknewthatVronskycouldnotbepreventedfromamusinghimselfwithpainting;heknewthatheandalldilettantihadaperfectrighttopaintwhattheyliked,butitwasdistastefultohim.Amancouldnotbepreventedfrommakinghimselfabigwaxdoll,andkissingit.Butifthemanweretocomewiththedollandsitbeforeamaninlove,andbegincaressinghisdollasthelovercaressedthewomanheloved,itwouldbedistastefultothelover.JustsuchadistastefulsensationwaswhatMihailovfeltatthesightofVronsky’spainting:hefeltitbothludicrousandirritating,bothpitiableandoffensive.

           Vronsky’sinterestinpaintingandtheMiddleAgesdidnotlastlong.Hehadenoughtasteforpaintingtobeunabletofinishhispicture.Thepicturecametoastandstill
