           “DoyouknowthisMihailov?”

           “Ihavemethim.Buthe’saqueerfish,andquitewithoutbreeding.Youknow,oneofthoseuncouthnewpeopleone’ssooftencomingacrossnowadays,oneofthosefree-thinkersyouknow,whoarerearedd’embléeintheoriesofatheism,scepticism,andmaterialism.Informerdays,”saidGolenishtchev,notobserving,ornotwillingtoobserve,thatbothAnnaandVronskywantedtospeak,“informerdaysthefree-thinkerwasamanwhohadbeenbroughtupinideasofreligion,law,andmorality,andonlythroughconflictandstrugglecametofree-thought;butnowtherehassprungupanewtypeofbornfree-thinkerswhogrowupwithoutevenhavingheardofprinciplesofmoralityorofreligion,oftheexistenceofauthorities,whogrowupdirectlyinideasofnegationineverything,thatistosay,savages.Well,he’softhatclass.
