           “Wellthen,”Vronskybegantostartaconversationofsomesort;“soyou’resettledhere?You’restillatthesamework,then?”hewenton,recallingthathehadbeentoldGolenishtchevwaswritingsomething.

           “Yes,I’mwritingthesecondpartoftheTwoElements,”saidGolenishtchev,coloringwithpleasureatthequestion“thatis,tobeexact,Iamnotwritingityet;Iampreparing,collectingmaterials.Itwillbeoffarwiderscope,andwilltouchonalmostallquestions.WeinRussiarefusetoseethatwearetheheirsofByzantium,”andhelaunchedintoalongandheatedexplanationofhisviews.

           VronskyatthefirstmomentfeltembarrassedatnotevenknowingofthefirstpartoftheTwoElements,ofwhichtheauthorspokeassomethingwellknown.ButasGolenishtchevbegantolaydownhisopinionsandVronskywasabletofollowthemevenwithoutknowingtheTwoElements,helistenedtohimwithsomeinterest,forGolenishtchevspokewell.ButVronskywasstartledandannoyedbythenervousirascibilitywithwhichGolenishtchevtalkedofthesubjectthatengrossedhim.Ashewentontalking,hiseyesglitteredmoreandmoreangrily;hewasmoreandmorehurriedinhisrepliestoimaginaryopponents,andhisfacegrewmoreandmoreexcitedandworried.RememberingGolenishtchev,athin,lively,good-naturedandwell-bredboy,alwaysattheheadoftheclass,Vronskycouldnotmakeoutthereasonofhisirritability,andhedidnotlikeit.
