           Butifhehadbeenasked,andthosewholookedatit“properly”hadbeenasked,exactlyhowtheydidlookatit,bothheandtheywouldhavebeengreatlypuzzledtoanswer.

           Inreality,thosewhoinVronsky’sopinionhadthe“proper”viewhadnosortofviewatall,butbehavedingeneralaswell-bredpersonsdobehaveinregardtoallthecomplexandinsolubleproblemswithwhichlifeisencompassedonallsides;theybehavedwithpropriety,avoidingallusionsandunpleasantquestions.Theyassumedanairoffullycomprehendingtheimportandforceofthesituation,ofacceptingandevenapprovingofit,butofconsideringitsuperfluousanduncalledfortoputallthisintowords.

           VronskyatoncedivinedthatGolenishtchevwasofthisclass,andthereforewasdoublypleasedtoseehim.Andinfact,Golenishtchev’smannertoMadameKarenina,whenhewastakentocallonher,wasallthatVronskycouldhavedesired.Obviouslywithouttheslightestefforthesteeredclearofallsubjectswhichmightleadtoembarrassment.

           HehadnevermetAnnabefore,andwasstruckbyherbeauty,andstillmorebythefranknesswithwhichsheacceptedherposition.SheblushedwhenVronskybroughtinGolenishtchev,andhewasextremelycharmedbythischildishblushoverspreadinghercandidandhandsomeface.Butwhathelikedparticularlywasthewayinwhichatonce,asthoughonpurposethattheremightbenomisunderstandingwithanoutsider,shecalledVronskysimplyAlexey,andsaidtheyweremovingintoahousetheyhadjusttaken,whatwasherecalledapalazzo.
