           “Marriagesaren’tmadenowadaysastheyusedtobe,”wasthoughtandsaidbyalltheseyounggirls,andevenbytheirelders.Buthowmarriagesweremadenow,theprincesscouldnotlearnfromanyone.TheFrenchfashionoftheparentsarrangingtheirchildren’sfuturewasnotaccepted;itwascondemned.TheEnglishfashionofthecompleteindependenceofgirlswasalsonotaccepted,andnotpossibleinRussiansociety.TheRussianfashionofmatchmakingbytheofficesofintermediatepersonswasforsomereasonconsideredunseemly;itwasridiculedbyeveryone,andbytheprincessherself.Buthowgirlsweretobemarried,andhowparentsweretomarrythem,nooneknew.Everyonewithwhomtheprincesshadchancedtodiscussthemattersaidthesamething:“Mercyonus,it’shightimeinourdaytocastoffallthatold-fashionedbusiness.It’stheyoungpeoplehavetomarry;andnottheirparents;andsoweoughttoleavetheyoungpeopletoarrangeitastheychoose.”Itwasveryeasyforanyonetosaythatwhohadnodaughters,buttheprincessrealizedthatintheprocessofgettingtoknoweachother,herdaughtermightfallinlove,andfallinlovewithsomeonewhodidnotcaretomarryherorwhowasquiteunfittobeherhusband.And,howevermuchitwasinstilledintotheprincessthatinourtimesyoungpeopleoughttoarrangetheirlivesforthemselves,shewasunabletobelieveit,justasshewouldhavebeenunabletobelievethat,atanytimewhatever,themostsuitableplaythingsforchildrenfiveyearsoldoughttobeloadedpistols.
