           Thedeacon’shandinaplushcuffacceptedathree-roublenoteunobtrusively,andthedeaconsaidhewouldputitdownintheregister,andhisnewbootscreakingjauntilyovertheflagstonesoftheemptychurch,hewenttothealtar.AmomentlaterhepeepedoutthenceandbeckonedtoLevin.
