           Divorce,thedetailsofwhichheknewbythistime,seemedtohimnowoutofthequestion,becausethesenseofhisowndignityandrespectforreligionforbadehistakinguponhimselfafictitiouschargeofadultery,andstillmoresufferinghiswife,pardonedandbelovedbyhim,tobecaughtinthefactandputtopublicshame.Divorceappearedtohimimpossiblealsoonotherstillmoreweightygrounds.

           Whatwouldbecomeofhissonincaseofadivorce?Toleavehimwithhismotherwasoutofthequestion.Thedivorcedmotherwouldhaveherownillegitimatefamily,inwhichhispositionasastepsonandhiseducationwouldnotbegood.Keephimwithhim?Heknewthatwouldbeanactofvengeanceonhispart,andthathedidnotwant.Butapartfromthis,whatmorethanallmadedivorceseemimpossibletoAlexeyAlexandrovitchwas,thatbyconsentingtoadivorcehewouldbecompletelyruiningAnna.ThesayingofDaryaAlexandrovnaatMoscow,thatindecidingonadivorcehewasthinkingofhimself,andnotconsideringthatbythishewouldberuiningherirrevocably,hadsunkintohisheart.Andconnectingthissayingwithhisforgivenessofher,withhisdevotiontothechildren,heunderstooditnowinhisownway.Toconsenttoadivorce,togiveherherfreedom,meantinhisthoughtstotakefromhimselfthelasttiethatboundhimtolifethechildrenwhomheloved;andtotakefromherthelastpropthatstayedheronthepathofright,tothrustherdowntoherruin.
