           ThepresenceofPrincessTverskayawasunpleasanttoAlexeyAlexandrovitchfromthememoriesassociatedwithher,andalsobecausehedislikedher,andhewentstraighttothenursery.InthedaynurserySeryozha,leaningonthetablewithhislegsonachair,wasdrawingandchattingawaymerrily.TheEnglishgoverness,whohadduringAnna’sillnessreplacedtheFrenchone,wassittingneartheboyknittingashawl.Shehurriedlygotup,curtseyed,andpulledSeryozha.

           AlexeyAlexandrovitchstrokedhisson’shair,answeredthegoverness’sinquiriesabouthiswife,andaskedwhatthedoctorhadsaidofthebaby.

           “Thedoctorsaiditwasnothingserious,andheorderedabath,sir.”

           “Butsheisstillinpain,”saidAlexeyAlexandrovitch,listeningtothebaby’sscreaminginthenextroom.

           “Ithinkit’sthewet-nurse,sir,”theEnglishwomansaidfirmly.

           “Whatmakesyouthinkso?”heasked,stoppingshort.

           “It’sjustasitwasatCountessPaul’s,sir.Theygavethebabymedicine,anditturnedoutthatthebabywassimplyhungry:thenursehadnomilk,sir.”

           AlexeyAlexandrovitchpondered,andafterstandingstillafewsecondshewentinattheotherdoor.Thebabywaslyingwithitsheadthrownback,stiffeningitselfinthenurse’sarms,andwouldnottaketheplumpbreastofferedit;anditneverceasedscreaminginspiteofthedoublehushingofthewet-nurseandtheothernurse,whowasbendingoverher.

           “Stillnobetter?”saidAlexeyAlexandrovitch.

           “She’sveryrestless,”answeredthenurseinawhisper.
