           StepanArkadyevitchmadenoreply,hemerelyglancedatMatveyinthelooking-glass.Intheglance,inwhichtheireyesmetinthelooking-glass,itwasclearthattheyunderstoodoneanother.StepanArkadyevitch’seyesasked:“Whydoyoutellmethat?don’tyouknow?”

           StepanArkadyevitchsawMatveywantedtomakeajokeandattractattentiontohimself.Tearingopenthetelegram,hereaditthrough,guessingatthewords,misspeltastheyalwaysareintelegrams,andhisfacebrightened.

           “Matvey,mysisterAnnaArkadyevnawillbeheretomorrow,”hesaid,checkingforaminutethesleek,plumphandofthebarber,cuttingapinkpaththroughhislong,curlywhiskers.

           “ThankGod!”saidMatvey,showingbythisresponsethathe,likehismaster,realizedthesignificanceofthisarrivalthatis,thatAnnaArkadyevna,thesisterhewassofondof,mightbringaboutareconciliationbetweenhusbandandwife.

           “Alone,orwithherhusband?”inquiredMatvey.

           StepanArkadyevitchcouldnotanswer,asthebarberwasatworkonhisupperlip,andheraisedonefinger.Matveynoddedatthelooking-glass.
