           Onthehatstandtherewasamilitaryovercoat.AlexeyAlexandrovitchnoticeditandasked:

           “Whoishere?”

           “Thedoctor,themidwife,andCountVronsky.”

           AlexeyAlexandrovitchwentintotheinnerrooms.

           Inthedrawing-roomtherewasnoone;atthesoundofhisstepstherecameoutofherboudoirthemidwifeinacapwithlilacribbons.

           ShewentuptoAlexeyAlexandrovitch,andwiththefamiliaritygivenbytheapproachofdeathtookhimbythearmanddrewhimtowardsthebedroom.

           “ThankGodyou’vecome!Shekeepsonaboutyouandnothingbutyou,”shesaid.

           “Makehastewiththeice!”thedoctor’speremptoryvoicesaidfromthebedroom.

           AlexeyAlexandrovitchwentintoherboudoir.

           Atthetable,sittingsidewaysinalowchair,wasVronsky,hisfacehiddeninhishands,weeping.Hejumpedupatthedoctor’svoice,tookhishandsfromhisface,andsawAlexeyAlexandrovitch.Seeingthehusband,hewassooverwhelmedthathesatdownagain,drawinghisheaddowntohisshoulders,asifhewantedtodisappear;buthemadeaneffortoverhimself,gotupandsaid:

           “Sheisdying.Thedoctorssaythereisnohope.Iamentirelyinyourpower,onlyletmebehere...thoughIamatyourdisposal.I....
