           Buthehadnotrealizedwhataneffectitwouldhaveonher,hehadnotputhimselfinherplace.Itwasonlywhenthesameeveninghecametotheirhousebeforethetheater,wentintoherroomandsawhertear-stained,pitiful,sweetface,miserablewithsufferinghehadcausedandnothingcouldundo,hefelttheabyssthatseparatedhisshamefulpastfromherdovelikepurity,andwasappalledatwhathehaddone.

           “Takethem,takethesedreadfulbooks!”shesaid,pushingawaythenotebookslyingbeforeheronthetable.“Whydidyougivethemme?No,itwasbetteranyway,”sheadded,touchedbyhisdespairingface.“Butit’sawful,awful!”

           Hisheadsank,andhewassilent.Hecouldsaynothing.

           “Youcan’tforgiveme,”hewhispered.

           “Yes,Iforgiveyou;butit’sterrible!”

           Buthishappinesswassoimmensethatthisconfessiondidnotshatterit,itonlyaddedanothershadetoit.Sheforgavehim;butfromthattimemorethaneverheconsideredhimselfunworthyofher,morallyboweddownlowerthaneverbeforeher,andprizedmorehighlythaneverhisundeservedhappiness.
