           Theyweredisputingaboutthemisappropriationofcertainsumsandthelayingofcertainpipes,andSergeyIvanovitchwasverycuttingtotwomembers,andsaidsomethingatgreatlengthwithanairoftriumph;andanothermember,scribblingsomethingonabitofpaper,begantimidlyatfirst,butafterwardsansweredhimveryviciouslyanddelightfully.AndthenSviazhsky(hewastheretoo)saidsomethingtoo,veryhandsomelyandnobly.Levinlistenedtothem,andsawclearlythatthesemissingsumsandthesepipeswerenotanythingreal,andthattheywerenotatallangry,butwereallthenicest,kindestpeople,andeverythingwasashappyandcharmingaspossibleamongthem.Theydidnoharmtoanyone,andwereallenjoyingit.WhatstruckLevinwasthathecouldseethroughthemalltoday,andfromlittle,almostimperceptiblesignsknewthesoulofeach,andsawdistinctlythattheywereallgoodatheart.AndLevinhimselfinparticulartheywereallextremelyfondofthatday.Thatwasevidentfromthewaytheyspoketohim,fromthefriendly,affectionatewayeventhosehedidnotknowlookedathim.

           “Well,didyoulikeit?”SergeyIvanovitchaskedhim.

           “Verymuch.Ineversupposeditwassointeresting!Capital!Splendid!”

           SviazhskywentuptoLevinandinvitedhimtocomeroundtoteawithhim.LevinwasutterlyatalosstocomprehendorrecallwhatitwashehaddislikedinSviazhsky,whathehadfailedtofindinhim.Hewasacleverandwonderfullygood-heartedman.

           “Mostdelighted,”hesaid,andaskedafterhiswifeandsister-in-law.
