           Justasitalwaysseemsthatonebruisesoneselfonasoreplace,soStepanArkadyevitchfeltnowthattheconversationwouldbyillluckfalleverymomentonAlexeyAlexandrovitch’ssorespot.Hewouldagainhavegothisbrother-in-lawaway,butAlexeyAlexandrovitchhimselfinquired,withcuriosity:

           AlexeyAlexandrovitch,withthesameexpressionofindifference,givenhimbyhisliftedeyebrows,satdownbesideDaryaAlexandrovna,andsmiledaffectedly.

           “It’sfortunate,”saidhe,“especiallyasIwasmeaningtoaskyoutoexcuseme,andtobetakingleave.Ihavetostarttomorrow.”

           DaryaAlexandrovnawasfirmlyconvincedofAnna’sinnocence,andshefeltherselfgrowingpaleandherlipsquiveringwithangeratthisfrigid,unfeelingman,whowassocalmlyintendingtoruinherinnocentfriend.
