           “Well,andwhathaveyoutosaytome?”saidLevininaquiveringvoice,feelingthatallthemusclesofhisfacewerequiveringtoo.“Howdoyoulookatthequestion?”

           StepanArkadyevitchslowlyemptiedhisglassofChablis,nevertakinghiseyesoffLevin.

           “I?”saidStepanArkadyevitch,“there’snothingIdesiresomuchasthatnothing!Itwouldbethebestthingthatcouldbe.”

           “Butyou’renotmakingamistake?Youknowwhatwe’respeakingof?”saidLevin,piercinghimwithhiseyes.“Youthinkit’spossible?”

           “Ithinkit’spossible.Whynotpossible?”

           “No!doyoureallythinkit’spossible?No,tellmeallyouthink!Oh,butif...ifrefusal’sinstoreforme!...IndeedIfeelsure....”

           “Whyshouldyouthinkthat?”saidStepanArkadyevitch,smilingathisexcitement.

           “Itseemssotomesometimes.Thatwillbeawfulforme,andforhertoo.”

           “Oh,well,anywaythere’snothingawfulinitforagirl.Everygirl’sproudofanoffer.”

           “Yes,everygirl,butnotshe.”

           StepanArkadyevitchsmiled.HesowellknewthatfeelingofLevin’s,thatforhimallthegirlsintheworldweredividedintotwoclasses:oneclassallthegirlsintheworldexcepther,andthosegirlswithallsortsofhumanweaknesses,andveryordinarygirls:theotherclassshealone,havingnoweaknessesofanysortandhigherthanallhumanity.

           “Stay,takesomesauce,”hesaid,holdingbackLevin’shandasitpushedawaythesauce.

           Levinobedientlyhelpedhimselftosauce,butwouldnotletStepanArkadyevitchgoonwithhisdinner.
