           “Hewasfumblingandkepttalkingquickly,quicklyinFrench,youknow:Ilfautlebattre,lefer,lebroyer,lepétrir....AndinmyhorrorItriedtowakeup,andwokeup...butwokeupinthedream.AndIbeganaskingmyselfwhatitmeant.AndKorneysaidtome:‘Inchildbirthyou’lldie,ma’am,you’lldie....’AndIwokeup.”

           “Whatnonsense,whatnonsense!”saidVronsky;buthefelthimselfthattherewasnoconvictioninhisvoice.

           “Butdon’tlet’stalkofit.Ringthebell,I’llhavetea.Andstayalittlenow;it’snotlongIshall....”

           Butallatonceshestopped.Theexpressionofherfaceinstantaneouslychanged
