           Shehadbroadenedoutallover,andinherfaceatthetimewhenshewasspeakingoftheactresstherewasanevilexpressionofhatredthatdistortedit.Helookedatherasamanlooksatafadedflowerhehasgathered,withdifficultyrecognizinginitthebeautyforwhichhepickedandruinedit.Andinspiteofthishefeltthatthen,whenhislovewasstronger,hecould,ifhehadgreatlywishedit,havetornthatloveoutofhisheart;butnow,whenasatthatmomentitseemedtohimhefeltnoloveforher,heknewthatwhatboundhimtohercouldnotbebroken.

           “Well,well,whatwasityouweregoingtosayabouttheprince?Ihavedrivenawaythefiend,”sheadded.Thefiendwasthenametheyhadgivenherjealousy.“Whatdidyoubegintotellmeabouttheprince?Whydidyoufinditsotiresome?”

           “Oh,itwasintolerable!”hesaid,tryingtopickupthethreadofhisinterruptedthought.“Hedoesnotimproveoncloseracquaintance.Ifyouwanthimdefined,hereheis:aprime,well-fedbeastsuchastakesmedalsatthecattleshows,andnothingmore,”hesaid,withatoneofvexationthatinterestedher.

           “No;howso?”shereplied.“He’sseenagreatdeal,anyway;he’scultured?”

           “It’sanutterlydifferentculturetheirculture.He’scultivated,onesees,simplytobeabletodespiseculture,astheydespiseeverythingbutanimalpleasures.”

           “Butdon’tyouallcarefortheseanimalpleasures?”shesaid,andagainhenoticedadarklookinhereyesthatavoidedhim.

           “Howisityou’redefendinghim?”hesaid,smiling.
