           Vronsky’sideashadchangedsincethedayofhisconversationwithAnnaintheVredegarden.UnconsciouslyyieldingtotheweaknessofAnnawhohadsurrenderedherselfuptohimutterly,andsimplylookedtohimtodecideherfate,readytosubmittoanythinghehadlongceasedtothinkthattheirtiemightendashehadthoughtthen.Hisambitiousplanshadretreatedintothebackgroundagain,andfeelingthathehadgotoutofthatcircleofactivityinwhicheverythingwasdefinite,hehadgivenhimselfentirelytohispassion,andthatpassionwasbindinghimmoreandmorecloselytoher.

           Hewasstillinthehallwhenhecaughtthesoundofherretreatingfootsteps.Heknewshehadbeenexpectinghim,hadlistenedforhim,andwasnowgoingbacktothedrawing-room.

           “No,”shecried,onseeinghim,andatthefirstsoundofhervoicethetearscameintohereyes.“No;ifthingsaretogoonlikethis,theendwillcomemuch,muchtoosoon.”

           “Whatisit,dearone?”

           “What?I’vebeenwaitinginagonyforanhour,twohours...No,Iwon’t...Ican’tquarrelwithyou.Ofcourseyoucouldn’tcome.No,Iwon’t.”Shelaidhertwohandsonhisshoulders,andlookedalongwhileathimwithaprofound,passionate,andatthesametimesearchinglook.Shewasstudyinghisfacetomakeupforthetimeshehadnotseenhim.Shewas,everytimeshesawhim,makingthepictureofhiminherimagination(incomparablysuperior,impossibleinreality)fitwithhimashereallywas.
