           Often,too,talkingtothepeasantsandexplainingtothemalltheadvantagesoftheplan,Levinfeltthatthepeasantsheardnothingbutthesoundofhisvoice,andwerefirmlyresolved,whateverhemightsay,nottoletthemselvesbetakenin.Hefeltthisespeciallywhenhetalkedtothecleverestofthepeasants,Ryezunov,anddetectedthegleaminRyezunov’seyeswhichshowedsoplainlybothironicalamusementatLevin,andthefirmconvictionthat,ifanyoneweretobetakenin,itwouldnotbehe,Ryezunov.ButinspiteofallthisLevinthoughtthesystemworked,andthatbykeepingaccountsstrictlyandinsistingonhisownway,hewouldprovetotheminthefuturetheadvantagesofthearrangement,andthenthesystemwouldgoofitself.

           Thesematters,togetherwiththemanagementofthelandstillleftonhishands,andtheindoorworkoverhisbook,soengrossedLevinthewholesummerthathescarcelyeverwentoutshooting.AttheendofAugustheheardthattheOblonskyshadgoneawaytoMoscow,fromtheirservantwhobroughtbacktheside-saddle.HefeltthatinnotansweringDaryaAlexandrovna’sletterhehadbyhisrudeness,ofwhichhecouldnotthinkwithoutaflushofshame,burnedhisships,andthathewouldnevergoandseethemagain.HehadbeenjustasrudewiththeSviazhskys,leavingthemwithoutsayinggood-bye.Buthewouldnevergotoseethemagaineither.Hedidnotcareaboutthatnow.Thebusinessofreorganizingthefarmingofhislandabsorbedhimascompletelyasthoughtherewouldneverbeanythingelseinhislife.
