           Morewomencameonthescenefromsomewhere,youngandhandsome,middle-aged,oldandugly,withchildrenandwithoutchildren.

           Thesamovarwasbeginningtosing;thelaborersandthefamily,havingdisposedofthehorses,cameintodinner.Levin,gettinghisprovisionsoutofhiscarriage,invitedtheoldmantotaketeawithhim.

           “Well,Ihavehadsometodayalready,”saidtheoldman,obviouslyacceptingtheinvitationwithpleasure.“Butjustaglassforcompany.”

           OvertheirteaLevinheardallabouttheoldman’sfarming.Tenyearsbefore,theoldmanhadrentedthreehundredacresfromtheladywhoownedthem,andayearagohehadboughtthemandrentedanotherthreehundredfromaneighboringlandowner.Asmallpartofthelandtheworstpartheletoutforrent,whileahundredacresofarablelandhecultivatedhimselfwithhisfamilyandtwohiredlaborers.Theoldmancomplainedthatthingsweredoingbadly.ButLevinsawthathesimplydidsofromafeelingofpropriety,andthathisfarmwasinaflourishingcondition.Ifithadbeenunsuccessfulhewouldnothaveboughtlandatthirty-fiveroublestheacre,hewouldnothavemarriedhisthreesonsandanephew,hewouldnothaverebuilttwiceafterfires,andeachtimeonalargerscale.Inspiteoftheoldman’scomplaints,itwasevidentthathewasproud,andjustlyproud,ofhisprosperity,proudofhissons,hisnephew,hissons’wives,hishorsesandhiscows,andespeciallyofthefactthathewaskeepingallthisfarminggoing.Fromhisconversationwiththeoldman,Levinthoughthewasnotaversetonewmethodseither.
