           AnnahadarrivedinPetersburgearlyinthemorning;thecarriagehadbeensenttomeetherinaccordancewithhertelegram,andsoAlexeyAlexandrovitchmighthaveknownofherarrival.Butwhenshearrived,hedidnotmeether.Shewastoldthathehadnotyetgoneout,butwasbusywithhissecretary.Shesentwordtoherhusbandthatshehadcome,wenttoherownroom,andoccupiedherselfinsortingoutherthings,expectinghewouldcometoher.Butanhourpassed;hedidnotcome.Shewentintothedining-roomonthepretextofgivingsomedirections,andspokeloudlyonpurpose,expectinghimtocomeoutthere;buthedidnotcome,thoughsheheardhimgotothedoorofhisstudyashepartedfromthechiefsecretary.Sheknewthatheusuallywentoutquicklytohisoffice,andshewantedtoseehimbeforethat,sothattheirattitudetooneanothermightbedefined.

           Shewalkedacrossthedrawing-roomandwentresolutelytohim.Whenshewentintohisstudyhewasinofficialuniform,obviouslyreadytogoout,sittingatalittletableonwhichherestedhiselbows,lookingdejectedlybeforehim.Shesawhimbeforehesawher,andshesawthathewasthinkingofher.

           Onseeingher,hewouldhaverisen,butchangedhismind,thenhisfaceflushedhotlyathingAnnahadneverseenbefore,andhegotupquicklyandwenttomeether,lookingnotathereyes,butabovethematherforeheadandhair.Hewentuptoher,tookherbythehand,andaskedhertositdown.

           “Iamverygladyouhavecome,”hesaid,sittingdownbesideher,andobviouslywishingtosaysomething,hestuttered.
