           Havingreadtheletter,heraisedhiseyestoher,andtherewasnodeterminationinthem.Shesawatoncethathehadbeenthinkingaboutitbeforebyhimself.Sheknewthatwhateverhemightsaytoher,hewouldnotsayallhethought.Andsheknewthatherlasthopehadfailedher.Thiswasnotwhatshehadbeenreckoningon.

           “Youseethesortofmanheis,”shesaid,withashakingvoice;“he....”

           “Forgiveme,butIrejoiceatit,”Vronskyinterrupted.“ForGod’ssake,letmefinish!”headded,hiseyesimploringhertogivehimtimetoexplainhiswords.“Irejoice,becausethingscannot,cannotpossiblyremainashesupposes.”

           “Whycan’tthey?”Annasaid,restraininghertears,andobviouslyattachingnosortofconsequencetowhathesaid.Shefeltthatherfatewassealed.

           Vronskymeantthataftertheduelinevitable,hethoughtthingscouldnotgoonasbefore,buthesaidsomethingdifferent.

           “Itcan’tgoon.Ihopethatnowyouwillleavehim.Ihope”hewasconfused,andreddened“thatyouwillletmearrangeandplanourlife.Tomorrow....”hewasbeginning.

           Shedidnotlethimgoon.

           “Butmychild!”sheshrieked.“Youseewhathewrites!Ishouldhavetoleavehim,andIcan’tandwon’tdothat.”

           “But,forGod’ssake,whichisbetter?leaveyourchild,orkeepupthisdegradingposition?”

           “Towhomisitdegrading?”

           “Toall,andmostofalltoyou.”

           “Yousaydegrading...don’tsaythat.Thosewordshavenomeaningforme,”shesaidinashakingvoice.Shedidnotwanthimnowtosaywhatwasuntrue
