           Serpuhovskoykissedthemoist,freshlipsofthegallant-lookingquartermaster,andwipinghismouthwithhishandkerchief,wentuptoVronsky.

           “HowgladIam!”hesaid,squeezinghishandanddrawinghimononeside.

           “Youlookafterhim,”thecolonelshoutedtoYashvin,pointingtoVronsky;andhewentdownbelowtothesoldiers.

           “Whyweren’tyouattheracesyesterday?Iexpectedtoseeyouthere,”saidVronsky,scrutinizingSerpuhovskoy.

           “Ididgo,butlate.Ibegyourpardon,”headded,andheturnedtotheadjutant:“Pleasehavethisdividedfromme,eachmanasmuchasitrunsto.”Andhehurriedlytooknotesforthreehundredroublesfromhispocketbook,blushingalittle.

           “Vronsky!Haveanythingtoeatordrink?”askedYashvin.“Hi,somethingforthecounttoeat!Ah,hereitis:haveaglass!”

           Thefêteatthecolonel’slastedalongwhile.Therewasagreatdealofdrinking.TheytossedSerpuhovskoyintheairandcaughthimagainseveraltimes.Thentheydidthesametothecolonel.Then,totheaccompanimentoftheband,thecolonelhimselfdancedwithPetritsky.
